Traditional chlorine bleach is a known killer of bacteria, however there are many people who believe that chlorine bleach is the best or only product to clean with. This may be true, the whole tried and true idea, but chlorine bleach is not only harmful to your skin and health, but also for your septic.
When chlorine bleach gets into your septic, it can cause bacterial die-off and potentially cause an odour outside of your house. There is an alternative to chlorine bleach that some people don’t know about, and that is oxygen bleach.
Oxygen bleach, or non-chlorine bleach, is comparable to your traditional bleach; it does the same job, but without being toxic. It’s not only safer for you and your family, but also safe for the environment and your septic!
It’s no secret that bacteria thrive with oxygen, it’s just science. Oxygen encourages bacterial growth; septic tanks need bacteria to help break down solids, so using oxygen bleach will increase oxygen making it a win-win situation.
Some people have decided that putting powered oxygen into the toilet once a week or so and flushing immediately has helped their septic tanks. We do not recommend doing this, however, cleaning with oxygen bleach over traditional bleach is highly recommended.
